In March 1984, Rory embarked on a brief but memorable acoustic tour alongside David Lindley, Richard Thompson and Juan Martín. The tour, called “Guitarists’ Night”, was the brainchild of Northern Irish concert promoter Paul Charles, who sought to unite these four renowned guitarists for a unique event. Paul, who would later become Rory’s agent, wrote in his autobiography Adventures in Wonderland that his decision to bring together these “masters in their own field” was inspired by their shared “hunger to explore other styles.”
Rory relished the experience, embracing the opportunity to explore a wide range of musical genres on his acoustic guitar. A passionate fan of flamenco, he quickly formed a special bond with Juan Martín, with whom he particularly enjoyed jamming during their performances. The tour also saw Rory and Juan invited to BBC Radio 1 for an interview and a brief live performance. I’m excited to share this recording here, thanks to the trusty Rob Phaneuf!
