Philipp J. Bösel is a highly experienced German photographer and the man behind the incredible photos of Rory captured at Rocklife in Cologne on 17th October 1990. Having been huge admirers of Philipp’s photos for many years, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to catch up with him recently and ask about his career and some of his memories from the special evening. Check out my short interview with him below.
1. Can you provide us with a general overview of your career in the music industry/music photography?
I [have been] a graphic designer and photographer at WDR (German Radio & TV Station) in Cologne since 1989. Already as a youngster I often went to rock and blues concerts. My camera was always with me. Later, when I was employed at WDR, I also photographed for the Rockpalast team.
2. Were you a fan of Rory’s music prior to photographing him?
No, I was not a fan, but he performed several times for the WDR Rockpalast.
3. Was Rocklife 1990 the first time that you photographed Rory/saw him in concert?
Yes, it was the first time I photographed him. The program Rockpalast was only briefly renamed Rocklife. The team was the same.
4. What are your memories of Rocklife 1990? What was it like to see Rory perform live?
I photographed for the Rocklife department. The Rocklife program featured two artists. First, there was a solo concert of Jack Bruce on the piano. It was rather boring and not quite my thing. Thereafter Rory performed. The concert hall freaked out. It was a really great performance. Backstage, after Rory’s performance, Jack Bruce picked up his bass guitar. He said to Rory, “Let’s play some Cream tracks.” That was the best.

5. Did you get to meet Rory? If so, what were your lasting impressions of him?
I was only there as a photographer. When Rory played his acoustic guitar, [it] was a very special moment for me. He played with his soul and from his soul.
6. Apart from Rory, what other artists have you photographed?
I photographed many musicians like Eric Burdon & The Animals, Mother’s Finest, Johnny Winter, Joan Armatrading, Walter Trout and many more.
7. What would you say is the highlight of your career?
I continue to photograph concerts in small clubs. Every concert and every musician are different. Every one is a highlight. For me, photography is my highlight.
