In January 1989, José Manuel Cuéllar wrote about Gallagher, how this Irishman born in 1948, between myth and legend, inscribed his name among the most important guitar players in the world. Self-taught since he was six years old, virtuoso on guitar, harmonica and saxophone………
……..He mastered the guitar like few others, he connected with people and shared his emotions. He was much loved in Spain, his works were resounding successes. At his last appearance in the country, he was overweight but had great wisdom on the guitar and tremendous intensity………..
………….Rory did not know how to read music, nor did he need to master the guitar in all its forms. He played by ear. He says that Muddy Watters and the blues were his greatest influences, that he did not like his own voice because he couldn’t reach the high notes. He didn’t need to, it was like part of an instrument. He liked to improvise, he lengthened or modified the chords ……
………….He never gave a concert based on a planned setlist; even if there was one, he would change it.
For him, playing was letting himself be carried away by what the audience transmitted to him. It is because of that instrumental quality, because of his way of being and his career and his loyalty to his musical ideas, that he won the affection and respect of all.»
