Rory has a wide range of styles to offer: he is capable of perfectly playing everything from the most exciting rock to extracting the most innovative sounds on acoustic guitar, mandolin and harmonica, not to mention the freshest country-rock………..
………..One night in July 1967, producer Mervyn Solomon went to the Maritime Club in Belfast, where Rory was playing alongside Norman Damery (drums) and Eric Kitteringham (bass). The next day, an enthusiastic Mervyn offered for them to record an album and they instantly accepted. Part of this concert was included on a historic album, entitled “In the beginning”………..
………..Gallagher transforms himself live, generates a special magnetism on stage, is pure dynamite, enjoys himself to the limit, is passionate and at the same time concentrated. It is a joy to see him play and he spares nothing. His concerts can last an unpredictable length of time since one of his main qualities is improvisation; he begins to play a chord and instinctively his companions follow him. He changes a lot of the repertoire, and the order of the songs on the same tour and, even on the same day if, as in America, he plays two shows in a row. He doesn’t like the coldness of a setlist with written songs because, although there are obligatory songs. He likes to let himself be carried away by the reactions that the audience transmits to him, varying the songs and the different tempos of the concert on the fly. He prefers clubs to mammoth stages…
……….He has been one of the most assiduous guitarists at the Reading Festival. ……………
……….On 7-3-1975, he performed at the Monumental Theater in Madrid, to the fullest, and we all enjoyed a Rory bursting with energy This concert was recorded in its entirety by TVE, and it was broadcast between “Beat Club”, which was presented by Gonzalo García Pelayo and, later, Ramón Trecet. In March 1979, he played the Madrid Pavilion and it was a total blast, it was his birthday and he played more than three hours, with four encores. And his last visit to Madrid was in the Canciller room on 7-10-1986, where the reduced capacity meant that the concert took place in a very hot climate, both musically and atmospherically……………
………If you don’t have anything by Rory, I recommend any of the official live shows, they reflect the true magnitude of this golden Irishman, who makes the guitar speak, and makes those of us who love music tremble.
